The word “chura” is an Okinawan word that applies to all things beautiful, from the colors of the sea to the human heart.  Would you say that the sea is always and consistently beautiful?  Probably not.

The ocean can be mean.  It can be dirty.  So can the human heart.  I think that what a writer does is to take whatever life has to offer, to reinvent it, and to put it in a story that makes the reader feel that life is a beautiful thing–even the ugly parts.

As a newcomer to the writing world, that is what I am trying to do.  I want my writing to be like the process through which a caterpillar (and very few caterpillars could be beauty contest winners) becomes a butterfly.  The novel Katsuren is my debut as a “chura” writer.
